One of the most exciting parts of Paris (if you're like me) is being able to observe street style and compare it to what you know. The most rewarding part of attending a local university however is being able to observe more specifically the styles on campus of college students. And well... we have some catching up to do across the Atlantic.I thought I was prepared after spending the summer in the fashion capital of America and even I wasn't ready.
Parisians have mastered the art of simplistic chic. Most of the women I see everyday are in jeans, even sneakers, paired with a chic button down and a leather jacket. Brands are not as big of a necessity as style is. I have seen just as many white Reeboks as I have white Adidas.
So how do you dress like an everyday Parisian? With these following pieces:
- Skinny Jeans: I don't know if other styles of jeans have ever been a trend here but not as far as I can see. Every Parisian around wears jeans. If it's not that, it's business attire or a basic day dress.
- A Button Down: This has been the main style of shirts worn on the everyday, dresses up jeans and some athletic shoes enough to be classy casual.
- Leather Jacket: This one is huge, especially for fall. Leather jackets are everywhere and if it's not that, it's a suede trench coat. Best of all, I've seen designer leather jackets at thrift stores for no more than €120. Practical and still keeps you on trend.
- Everyday Athletic Shoe: Adidas Superstar are all the rage (as they are everywhere else around the world) but this is one item I've noticed brand to not be so big of a deal. I've noticed all brands of shoes with the same shape as the classic Adidas relatively equally around the city, with Adidas and Reebok (which was interesting) being the 2 major brands
- Crossbody Bag: Super important in the city of walking as transportation and pickpockets. If it isn't a tote, everybody in Paris has a crossbody, with the most popular being chainlink straps (after all this is the city of Chanel).
Think it would be hard to pull off Parisian chic? Probably not. Super classic, super versatile, and most importantly, super affordable.
xo.
